Inner Gospel
Daily Bread — scripture, a short word, and something to carry into the day.
Rest Is Not Retreat
The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 (NIV)
If you build anything for a living, rest can start to feel like theft. Every hour off is an hour the competition is working. Every quiet Saturday is a Saturday the pile grows.
But notice what Jesus said. The Sabbath was made for you — a gift handed down, not a rule imposed. God did not rest on the seventh day because He was tired. He rested to set a rhythm into creation, and then He invited us into it.
Refusing rest is not devotion. Often it is fear wearing the costume of diligence — the quiet belief that if we ever stop pushing, everything falls apart. That belief puts you at the center of a world you were never asked to hold up.
Rest is how you confess that God keeps the business running while you sleep.
Today’s Anchor
- Actually Stop Choose a real block of hours today with no work in them.
- Name the Fear Ask honestly what you think will fall apart if you rest. Then hand it over.
- Be Present Give someone in your house your undivided attention today.
Morning Prayer
Lord, teach me to rest without guilt. Loosen my grip on the things I have been carrying as if they were mine to hold. Thank You that the world does not depend on me, and that You never sleep. In Jesus' name, Amen.
